Every visit includes the $89 Eggers Safety Inspection

An 8-point electrical safety check plus your detailed estimate. The $89 is credited toward your job if you move forward. It’s only due if you decide not to go ahead.

The 8 points: electrical panel, main grounding & bonding, GFCI protection, smoke & CO detectors, outlets & switches, visible wiring, exterior electrical, and whole-home surge protection. Each one is marked Pass or Needs Attention.

Outlets, switches and dimmers guide

When to replace an outlet or switch, which type to choose, and the problems that point to something bigger.

Choosing the right device

Which outlets need GFCI protection?

GFCI protection shuts off power fast if current leaks to ground, which helps prevent shocks. Today’s standards call for GFCI protection in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, laundry areas, unfinished basements, crawl spaces, outdoors and near sinks. Older homes may not have it everywhere, and we can add it.

What’s the difference between GFCI and AFCI?

GFCI protects people from shock. AFCI protects against fires caused by arcing in damaged wiring or cords. Many newer homes need both in certain rooms, and some breakers and outlets do both.

Should I add USB or smart switches?

USB outlets are handy at desks, nightstands and kitchen counters. Smart switches and dimmers let you schedule lights and control them from your phone. Many smart switches need a neutral wire in the switch box, which some older homes don’t have, so we check before you buy.

Problems we fix

Why won’t my outlet work?

Common causes are a tripped GFCI somewhere else on the circuit, a tripped breaker, a worn outlet or a loose connection. Check for a GFCI with a reset button in nearby bathrooms, the garage or outside. If that doesn’t fix it, call us.

Why is my switch or outlet warm?

A slight warmth on a dimmer can be normal. If it’s too hot to touch, buzzes or smells, turn it off and call us. An outlet or switch that’s hot, discolored or smells like burning is not. Stop using it and call us; it usually means a loose connection or an overloaded device.

Can you replace two-prong outlets?

Yes. Swapping a two-prong outlet for a three-prong one is only safe when there’s a ground. If there isn’t, we can run a ground or install GFCI protection and label the outlet as allowed, and we explain the options.

“Eggers Electricians Brandon and Andy were professional, efficient, kind, polite and job knowledgeable. They were very aware of my home's furniture surroundings, as not to damage anything, as well as their primary objective is to be safe, as they had a cathedral ceiling fan to replace, 2 stories up. They worked as a cohesive team, and not only respected the customer, but eachother as well.…”

Switch and dimmer questions

Questions? Call 970-669-1883 or email info@eggerselectric.com.

Is it normal for a dimmer to feel warm?
A dimmer can feel slightly warm in normal use. If it's too hot to touch, buzzes or smells, turn it off and call us.
Why do my lights flicker on a dimmer?
Most often the dimmer is not rated for LED bulbs, or the bulbs are not dimmable. An LED-compatible dimmer usually fixes it.
What is a 3-way switch?
A 3-way setup lets you control one light from two locations, like the top and bottom of a stairway. Adding a second location usually means running a new cable between the switches.
Can you install smart switches?
Yes. Most smart switches need a neutral wire in the box, and older homes sometimes don’t have one there. We check before installing. See smart home electrical.
Can I replace a switch myself?
It’s safest to have an electrician do it. Replacing a switch means working inside a live electrical box. A licensed electrician confirms the wiring, the box size and the circuit first, which helps prevent overheating and shock hazards.
My switch stopped working. What should I check?
Check the breaker and any GFCI outlets on the circuit first. If those are fine, the switch or a connection may have failed, and an electrician should check it.
Do you replace outlets and switches during the $89 visit?
No. During the $89 Eggers Safety Inspection we spot-check outlets and switches, and check them more closely if you’ve had problems with them, but we don’t do outlet or switch work during the visit. If something needs replacing, we give you a written price and schedule the work, and the $89 is credited toward the job.
Do you install USB outlets?
Yes. We can swap standard outlets for outlets with built-in USB-A and USB-C ports at desks, nightstands and kitchen counters. Most USB outlets fit a standard box, though some need a deeper one.
