Surge protection and grounding services

Surges can come from the utility, from storms or from inside your own home. A good surge protector works best with a solid grounding system.

Whole-home surge protectors

Installed at your electrical panel to help protect the whole home’s wiring and appliances.

Often required with new service

Under the electrical code now used in Colorado, a whole-home surge protector is required when a home’s electrical service is installed or the service equipment is replaced. We’ll confirm what your local inspector requires for your address.

Ground rods

We check that your grounding electrodes, like ground rods, are in place and connected.

Water and gas bonding

We check the bonding to metal water piping and other metal systems that need it.

Layered protection

Plug-in surge strips at TVs and computers add another layer at the device.

Part of every Safety Check

Grounding, bonding and surge protection are on our 8-point checklist.

Surge protection and grounding questions

Questions? Call 970-669-1883 or email info@eggerselectric.com.

What is a whole-home surge protector?
A whole-home surge protector, or surge protective device, is installed at your electrical panel. It limits voltage spikes coming into the home so they are less likely to damage wiring, appliances and electronics.
Does a whole-home surge protector protect against lightning?
It helps with surges from nearby lightning and the utility, but no device can fully protect against a direct lightning strike. Plug-in surge strips at sensitive electronics add another layer.
Is whole-home surge protection required?
When a home’s electrical service is installed or its main service equipment is replaced, such as during most main panel upgrades, the electrical code now used in Colorado requires a whole-home surge protector. For other homes, it’s a recommended upgrade. We’ll confirm permit and inspection requirements for your address.
Why does grounding matter for surge protection?
A surge protector diverts surge energy into your home’s grounding system, so it works best when grounding and bonding are solid. Grounding by itself doesn’t stop surges. That’s why we check your grounding electrodes, grounding conductor and bonding when we install surge protection.
What does grounding and bonding mean?
Grounding connects your electrical system to the earth, usually through ground rods. Bonding ties metal parts, like metal water piping and equipment, together and back to your panel. Bonding is what gives fault current a solid path so breakers trip quickly, and together they reduce shock risk.
Do I need a permit for a surge protector?
Correcting grounding and other panel work usually needs an electrical permit. Whether a surge-protector-only install needs one depends on your city or county, so we’ll confirm permit and inspection requirements for your address and pull the permit whenever one is required.
How much does whole-home surge protection cost?
Every home is different, so we start with the $89 Eggers Safety Check & Estimate Visit. A licensed electrician runs an 8-point safety check and gives you an upfront price before any work starts. The $89 is credited toward the job if you move forward. All work is backed by our workmanship warranty.
