“Andy from Eggers Electric was terrific when he came to do an estimate for us.”
Berthoud mixes older homes around the historic downtown on Mountain Avenue with newer neighborhoods such as Heron Lakes and homes on larger lots outside town. Older homes can have undersized service, ungrounded outlets and aging panels; newer homes often need added circuits for shops, garages, EV chargers or hot tubs. Larger lots also bring longer runs to detached garages and outbuildings, which we size for voltage drop. See rewiring and hot tub circuits.
The Town of Berthoud Building Department (807 Mountain Ave.) issues building permits, and SAFEbuilt performs the Town's inspections. The Town lists electrical service, electrical work and hot tub electrical hook-ups among the projects that require a permit. We pull the permit and handle inspections. Berthoud spans Larimer and Weld counties, but inside town limits the Town handles permits on both sides of the county line. Properties outside town limits are permitted through Larimer County or Weld County, depending on which side of the line they’re on.
Berthoud homes are served by Xcel Energy or Poudre Valley REA depending on location. We confirm your utility for your address and coordinate with them when the job needs a disconnect or reconnect. For outages, see standby generators and transfer switches.
Berthoud calls often involve detached garages and shops that need a subpanel, exterior and security lighting, and generator hookups so the furnace and well pump keep running during an outage. We plan the wire size for long runs, set up a transfer switch or a listed interlock made for your panel for a portable generator, and coordinate with your utility when the job needs a disconnect or reconnect.

Most visits start with the $89 Eggers Safety Check & Estimate Visit: a licensed electrician diagnoses the problem and does our 8-point Eggers Safety Inspection (not a city permit inspection): we verify grounding and bonding, spot-check outlets and switches, and visually check the panel, GFCI protection, smoke and CO alarms, visible wiring, exterior electrical and whole-home surge protection. You get a written price before work starts, and the $89 is credited toward your job when you go ahead. Call 7 days, 7am–8pm; office hours are Monday–Friday, 7:30am–4pm.
Berthoud is just down US-287 from our Loveland shop, and we handle repairs, upgrades and backup power there.
With a power inlet and a transfer switch or a listed interlock made for your panel, never a cord into a wall outlet. Never run a generator indoors, in a garage, or near windows and doors.
Common signs are frequent tripping, no open breaker spaces, an old fuse box, double-tapped breakers, or plans for an EV charger, heat pump or hot tub. A load calculation confirms it, and replacing service equipment now requires a surge protector.
A breaker trips to protect the wiring from an overloaded circuit, a short circuit or a ground fault. Unplug a few things and reset it once. If it trips again right away, trips with nothing plugged in, or you notice heat or a burning smell, stop resetting it and call a licensed electrician.
Only small plug-and-play tubs made for a 120-volt GFCI outlet can plug in, and never through an extension cord. Most full-size tubs need a dedicated, hardwired 240-volt GFCI-protected circuit.
No. A dimmer can feel slightly warm, but a warm outlet is not normal. Unplug what’s in it, turn off the breaker if it’s safe to do so, and call us. If you see smoke or flames, get out and call 911.
