Bring us in early and the electrical is planned, not patched in later.

Electrical remodel planning guide

How to plan the electrical side of a kitchen, bath or basement remodel so the finished space works the way you live.

Plan early

Bring us in before the walls close

The best time to plan outlets, lighting and circuits is before drywall goes up. Once walls are open, adding a circuit or moving a box is far simpler than after finishes are in.

Think about how you’ll use the room

Where will the coffee maker, TV, desk or vanity mirror go? Do you want under-cabinet lighting, a dimmer at each door, or USB outlets by the bed? A short walkthrough now saves changes later.

Check your panel first

Kitchens and finished basements often add several new circuits. During the $89 Eggers Safety Inspection we look at your panel and service so you know up front whether there’s room or an upgrade is needed.

Coordinate with your other trades

If you have a contractor, cabinet installer or plumber on the job, we coordinate timing for rough-in and finish so the electrical work doesn’t hold anyone up.

What to expect

Rough-in and finish

Most remodels have two electrical stages: rough-in, when wire and boxes go in, and finish, when devices and fixtures are installed. The rough-in inspection happens before walls are closed up, and a final inspection happens after the finish work.

Permits

Remodel electrical work usually needs a permit. We pull it and schedule the inspections with the City of Loveland or the city or county where you live.

What affects the price

The size of the space, the number of new circuits and fixtures, wall access, and whether your panel needs work. You get a written price before any work starts.

Related work

Remodels often pair well with indoor lighting, appliance circuits and GFCI protection. The work is backed by our 1-year workmanship warranty.

“Andy helped us resolve a mystery outlet power loss after a counter installation. He was able to narrow it down, show me the problem, advise a solution, and help us prove this to the counter install folks. The fix required cutting some drywall which he did with minimal cuts and mess to make patching easier later. So glad he knew what to do.…”

Remodel electrical questions

Questions? Call 970-669-1883 or email info@eggerselectric.com.

When should I bring in an electrician for a remodel?
At the design stage, before demolition and well before drywall, so circuits, lighting, outlets and panel capacity are planned instead of added later.
Do remodels need an electrical permit?
Yes, when wiring is added or changed. In Fort Collins, projects involving more than one trade use a remodel/alteration permit. We handle the electrical permit.
Will a remodel need AFCI and GFCI protection?
Usually. Remodels that add or change circuits need a permit and current AFCI and GFCI protection for the new work. We include it in your price.
Will my panel handle a kitchen remodel?
Kitchen remodels often add circuits for appliances and countertops, so we do a load check first. See panel upgrades and appliance circuits.
Can you add recessed lighting during a remodel?
Yes, and it is the easiest time to do it. See indoor lighting.
How is remodel electrical work priced?
Every visit includes the repair, installation or service you called us for, plus the $89 Eggers Safety Inspection; you get a written price before work starts, and the $89 is credited toward the job when you go ahead.
