A safe way to connect your portable generator

Skip the extension cords. We install a proper connection so you can power the circuits you choose during an outage.

Outdoor power inlet

A weather-rated inlet on the outside of your home, rated for your generator’s cord and output.

Listed interlock kit

An interlock made and listed for your panel, so the main and generator breakers can never be on at the same time.

Manual transfer switch option

If an interlock isn’t available for your panel, a manual transfer switch does the same job.

Never backfeed through an outlet

Plugging a generator into a dryer or wall outlet with a double-ended cord is illegal and dangerous. It can send power onto utility lines, put line workers at risk, shock anyone who touches the exposed plug and start fires.

Generator placement

Run generators outdoors, away from doors, windows and vents, and have working CO alarms inside.

Permit handled

Inlets and interlocks need an electrical permit. We pull it and schedule the inspection.

Portable generator questions

Questions? Call 970-669-1883 or email info@eggerselectric.com.

What is a generator interlock kit?
An interlock is a mechanical device on your electrical panel that keeps the main breaker and the generator breaker from being on at the same time. That keeps generator power from flowing back onto utility lines. It must be listed for your specific panel and installed with a permit.
What is a generator power inlet?
A power inlet is a weather-rated connection on the outside of your home. You plug your generator’s cord into the inlet instead of running extension cords through a door or window. The inlet, the generator cord and the generator breaker in your panel all have to be rated for your generator’s output, and we’ll tell you which cord to use.
Can I plug my generator into a dryer outlet?
No. Backfeeding a home through a dryer or wall outlet with a double-ended cord is dangerous and against code. It can energize utility lines and injure line workers, shock anyone who touches the exposed plug and overheat wiring. Use a properly installed inlet with an interlock or transfer switch.
Do I need a permit for an inlet and interlock?
Yes. Installing an inlet and an interlock or transfer switch is electrical work that needs a permit and inspection. We pull the permit and schedule the inspection for you.
Where should I put my generator?
Always run a portable generator outdoors, away from doors, windows and vents, and follow the distance in your generator’s manual. Never run it in a garage, even with the door open. Make sure your home has working carbon monoxide alarms.
Can a portable generator run my whole house?
Usually not all at once. Most portable generators can run essentials like the furnace fan, fridge, some lights and outlets. We help you choose which circuits to use and how to avoid overloading the generator.
How much does a portable generator hookup cost?
Every home is different, so we start with the $89 Eggers Safety Check & Estimate Visit. A licensed electrician runs an 8-point safety check and gives you an upfront price before any work starts. The $89 is credited toward the job if you move forward. All work is backed by our workmanship warranty.
