CO alarms near bedrooms

Colorado requires a CO alarm near each bedroom, generally within 15 feet of the bedroom door, in homes with fuel-burning appliances or an attached garage when the home is sold, rented to a new tenant or has certain permitted work done. Homes with a fireplace are covered at sale.

In each bedroom, outside sleeping areas and on every level, including basements.

Replace old alarms

Smoke alarms should be replaced 10 years after their manufacture date. Check the date on the back.

Where should smoke alarms be installed?

Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement. We keep them away from spots near cooking appliances and bathrooms that cause nuisance alarms.

Where should carbon monoxide alarms go?

Colorado law requires a working CO alarm within 15 feet of the entrance to each bedroom (or where the local building code specifies) in homes with fuel-burning appliances or an attached garage. It applies when a home is sold, when a rental gets a new tenant, and when certain permitted remodeling or appliance replacement is done. Homes with a fireplace are included at sale. Many homeowners also add a CO alarm on each level, and we recommend it.

How often should I replace smoke and CO alarms?

Replace smoke alarms 10 years after the manufacture date printed on the back. CO alarms usually need replacing sooner, often every 5 to 10 years. Follow the date or end-of-life warning on your alarm.

What does interconnected mean?

Interconnected alarms are linked, so when one detects smoke or CO, every alarm in the home sounds. That gives you the most warning, especially when bedroom doors are closed.

Should I choose hardwired or battery alarms?

Hardwired alarms with battery backup are typical for new homes and remodels and keep working during an outage. Where wiring isn’t practical, listed wireless interconnected alarms are an option. We’ll recommend what fits your home.

How often should I test my alarms?

Press the test button on each alarm once a month. If your alarms use replaceable batteries, follow the manufacturer’s schedule for changing them.
