Electrical repair guide

What causes the most common electrical problems, what you can safely check yourself, and when to stop and call.

What you can safely check

What should I check first when something stops working?

Check for a tripped breaker and for tripped GFCI outlets in bathrooms, the kitchen, the garage and outdoors. One GFCI can protect several outlets downstream of it. Reset a breaker once after unplugging some devices. If it trips again, stop and call.

What should I never try myself?

Opening the panel, replacing breakers or repairing wiring. Panel work is never a do-it-yourself job. If you notice heat, buzzing, sparks or a burning smell, turn off the circuit if you can do it safely and call us.

What we usually find

Loose connections and worn devices

Push-in (backstab) connections can loosen over time, and worn outlets and switches lose their grip. Both can cause dead outlets, flicker and heat. We repair the connection and test the rest of the circuit.

Loose neutrals

If some lights get brighter while others dim, that can mean a loose neutral, which is dangerous. Turn off the main breaker if it’s safe to do so, and call your utility and an electrician right away.

Ungrounded wiring

For two-prong outlets, the safe options include running a ground or adding GFCI protection with “GFCI Protected” and “No Equipment Ground” labels. See wiring and rewiring.

What our neighbors say

“Our tech Clint was courteous and professional and was able to come out the day after our call. More importantly he fixed the problem! We had an issue of multiple lights and switches not working after a swap of ceiling fixtures. Two other electricians- 1 a large outfit and 1 an independent - could not resolve it. We are extremely happy!”

Do you do electrical repairs in Loveland and Fort Collins?
Yes. Eggers Electric repairs outlets, switches, breakers, lighting and wiring problems for homes in Loveland, Fort Collins and throughout Northern Colorado.
My breaker keeps tripping. What should I do?
Unplug some devices on that circuit and reset the breaker once. If it trips again, stop resetting it and call an electrician; repeated tripping means something needs to be checked. Don't replace a breaker with a larger one yourself.
Why is an outlet or switch warm or buzzing?
Warmth or buzzing usually points to a loose connection, a worn device or an overloaded circuit. Stop using it, turn off its breaker if you can do so safely, and have it checked; loose connections can overheat.
Why do my lights flicker or dim?
A loose bulb or an incompatible dimmer is the usual cause of one flickering light. If lights dim across several rooms when a large appliance starts, or flicker throughout the house, a circuit or service connection may be loose; have it checked. See lighting services and panel upgrades.
Why is an outlet or switch not working?
Common causes are a tripped GFCI outlet elsewhere on the circuit, a tripped breaker, or a loose or failed connection. Check your GFCI outlets and panel first; if that doesn't fix it, we can find the cause.
Why did part of my house lose power?
Check the panel for a tripped breaker and test your GFCI outlets. If several rooms or 240-volt appliances lost power with no tripped breaker, the problem may be in your service or the utility side; call your utility to check for an outage, then call us.
Should I replace my two-prong outlets?
Two-prong outlets have no ground wire. Options include running a ground, or adding GFCI protection and labeling the outlets as having no equipment ground. We look at your wiring and recommend the safest fit.
How much does electrical troubleshooting cost?
You get a written price before every job. On every visit, a licensed Eggers electrician handles the job you called about and runs our full Safety Inspection. There's a $89 service charge — and it is credited toward your job if you move forward.
When should I call an electrician right away?
If you smell burning, see sparks or scorch marks, or an outlet or panel is hot, turn off power to that circuit if you can do so safely and call right away. If there's smoke or fire, call 911.
What are your hours?
Call us at 970-669-1883 7 days a week, 7am–8pm. After 8pm, leave a message and we'll call you back the next morning.
Are repairs covered by a warranty?
Our workmanship is warranted for 1 year from the date of service. Parts carry the manufacturer's warranty. If something we installed fails under normal use, call us at 970-669-1883 and we'll come back and make it right. Full terms are on your invoice.
