Longmont Homes

Longmont has older homes around Old Town and Main Street alongside newer neighborhoods on the edges of town. In older homes we see small panels, ungrounded outlets and wiring that needs updating; in newer homes the usual call is a full panel when adding an EV charger, a hot tub or a basement finish. See panel upgrade and GFCI protection.

Permits in Longmont

Inside Longmont city limits, the City of Longmont issues electrical permits. Outside the city, Boulder County (or Weld County) issues them. We pull the permit and meet the inspector.

Electric Utility in Longmont

Inside city limits, Longmont Power & Communications, the city-owned utility, provides power. LPC also serves some homes outside the city; others there are served by a different utility, so we confirm yours by address. LPC handles all disconnects and reconnects itself, after the inspection is approved, and we coordinate that for you.

Projects We Do in Longmont

In Longmont we are most often asked to add EV charger circuits, upgrade full or older panels, wire basement finishes and remodels, and track down circuits that trip or have gone dead. For homes with a standby generator or plans for one, we size the system and connect it with a transfer switch or a listed interlock made for your panel, under the electrical permit the job needs, and we coordinate with LPC when the utility needs to review it. See generators.

Common electrical questions from Longmont homeowners

We serve Longmont homes for repairs, panel and service upgrades, EV chargers and backup power.

Repairs in Longmont homes

When does a Longmont home need a panel upgrade?

Common signs are frequent tripping, no open breaker spaces, an old fuse box, double-tapped breakers, or plans for an EV charger, heat pump or hot tub. A load calculation confirms it, and replacing service equipment now requires a surge protector.

Can my Longmont home handle a Level 2 EV charger?

A load calculation tells us. It may show you can add a charger as is, with a load-management device, or with a charger set to a lower current. A subpanel adds breaker space, but not more total power.

What are my options for two-prong outlets?

Run a ground to the outlet, or add GFCI protection and label it “GFCI Protected” and “No Equipment Ground.” A three-prong outlet on an ungrounded circuit without GFCI is unsafe, and cheater adapters don’t ground anything.

Upgrades for Longmont homes

Is a warm outlet normal?

No. A dimmer can feel slightly warm, but a warm outlet is not normal. Unplug what’s in it, turn off the breaker if it’s safe to do so, and call us. If you see smoke or flames, get out and call 911.

How should a generator connect to my Longmont home?

With a power inlet and a transfer switch or a listed interlock made for your panel, never a cord into a wall outlet. Never run a generator indoors, in a garage, or near windows and doors.

What our neighbors say

“Andy helped us resolve a mystery outlet power loss after a counter installation. He was able to narrow it down, show me the problem, advise a solution, and help us prove this to the counter install folks. The fix required cutting some drywall which he did with minimal cuts and mess to make patching easier later. So glad he knew what to do.…”

What does the Eggers Safety Inspection include?
A licensed electrician looks at the problem you called about and does our 8-point Eggers Safety Inspection (an in-home safety check, not a city or county permit inspection). We check your main grounding and bonding connections, and visually check the parts we can see and safely reach: the electrical panel, GFCI protection, smoke and CO alarms, visible wiring, exterior electrical, and whole-home surge protection. We spot-check outlets and switches, or check them more closely if you have had problems with them. Each of the 8 points is marked Pass or Needs Attention, with notes and any recommended improvements, plus a written price before work starts. It is not a code certification, a home inspection or a permit inspection, and it can't find every problem hidden inside walls. On every visit, a licensed Eggers electrician handles the job you called about and runs our full Safety Inspection. There's a $89 service charge — and it is credited toward your job if you move forward.
