If you notice a burning smell, heat, sparks or buzzing, turn off the circuit if you can do it safely and call us right away.
Often a tripped GFCI, a loose connection or a failed device. We trace it to the cause.
Overloads, shorts and ground faults each look different. We find which one it is.
One fixture, one circuit or the whole house tells us where to look.
Heat and buzzing can mean a loose or overheated connection. Call us right away.
Partial power loss can point to a service or utility-side problem. We check your side and coordinate with Loveland Water and Power when it is theirs.
Wind, ice and fallen limbs can damage the service mast and meter base. We repair your side and coordinate the reconnect.

The 8 points: electrical panel, main grounding & bonding, GFCI protection, smoke & CO detectors, outlets & switches, visible wiring, exterior electrical, and whole-home surge protection. Each one is marked Pass or Needs Attention.

Straight answers to the problems Loveland homeowners call us about most, from a locally owned electrician that has worked here since 1973.
Most dead outlets and lights in Loveland homes come down to three causes: a tripped GFCI outlet, a loose connection, or a worn-out device. Check the GFCI outlets in bathrooms, the kitchen, the garage and outdoors first, because one GFCI can protect several outlets downstream of it.
If resetting the GFCI and the breaker doesn’t bring it back, the problem is usually inside a box. Push-in (backstab) connections on older outlets can loosen over time. An electrician finds the failed connection, repairs it and tests the rest of the circuit so the same problem doesn’t show up one room over.
A breaker trips to protect the wiring from an overloaded circuit, a short circuit or a ground fault. Unplug a few things and reset it once. If it trips again right away, trips with nothing plugged in, or you notice heat or a burning smell, stop resetting it and call a licensed electrician.
Repeated tripping can also point to a worn breaker or a double-tapped breaker, where two wires share a terminal made for one. Both are panel repairs, and panel work is never a do-it-yourself job. See our panel service and repair page.
In a single fixture, flickering is usually a loose bulb or an older dimmer made for incandescent bulbs; an LED-compatible dimmer usually fixes it. If flicker affects several lights, or comes with buzzing or a burning smell, call us, because it can be a loose connection.
If lights across the house flicker, or some get brighter while others dim, that can mean a loose neutral, which is dangerous. Turn off the main breaker if it’s safe to do so, and call Loveland Water and Power and an electrician right away.
A dimmer can feel slightly warm. A warm outlet is not normal. Unplug what’s in it, turn off the breaker if it’s safe to do so, and call us. Heat, buzzing, discoloration or a burning smell usually means a loose or overheated connection. If you see smoke or flames, get out and call 911.
Two-prong outlets can be updated safely in a few ways: run a ground to the outlet, or add GFCI protection and label the outlet “GFCI Protected” and “No Equipment Ground.” A three-prong outlet on an ungrounded circuit without GFCI protection is unsafe, and cheater adapters don’t ground anything.
If problems keep coming back in different rooms, the wiring itself may be worn out. Signs include frequent tripping, warm devices, scorched outlets and old cloth-covered or aluminum wiring. Two-prong outlets can often be updated without a full rewire. An electrician can tell you whether targeted repairs are enough or a section should be rewired. Burning smells, buzzing, or warm outlets are urgent. Turn off the circuit and call us. See wiring and rewiring.
Swapping a switch, outlet or light fixture for a like one usually doesn't need a permit. Most other electrical work does, and we'll tell you up front if yours does. Inside Loveland city limits, the City of Loveland issues electrical permits. In unincorporated Larimer County, the county issues electrical permits, including for repairs and generator installs. Inside other towns, that town issues them. In Estes Park, the Colorado State Electrical Board handles them. We pull the permit when one is needed.
Loveland Water and Power is the city-owned utility. We coordinate with it when a repair needs a disconnect or reconnect, such as meter, service or storm-damage work. If your whole street is dark, that’s a utility outage: report it to Loveland Water and Power. If only your home or part of it is out, call us.
