Planning outdoor lighting

Start with how you use the outside

Think about where you walk at night, where you park, where guests arrive and which areas you want to keep an eye on. That tells us where light matters most.

Security without glare

Motion-sensing lights by doors, garages and side yards add security without lighting the whole neighborhood all night. We aim fixtures to light your property, not your neighbor’s windows.

Controls

Dusk-to-dawn sensors, timers and smart switches turn lights on and off for you. We can add a switch inside where you want one.

Fixtures rated for the location

Fixtures exposed to rain or snow need a wet-location rating; covered porches can use damp-rated fixtures. We help you choose fixtures made for Northern Colorado sun, wind and snow.

What to expect

Weather-rated wiring

Outdoor circuits get weather-rated boxes and covers, and GFCI protection where required. Exterior electrical is one of the 8 points on our Eggers Safety Inspection.

Soffit and eave lighting

Recessed soffit lights and eave-mounted fixtures can add light and curb appeal. Access from the attic or ladder affects how we run the wire.

What affects the price

The number of fixtures, mounting height, how far we need to run wire, and whether new switches or circuits are needed. You get a written price before any work starts.

“I had a ceiling fan installed by “Sterling”, who also took the time to set up the Bond Home app and wrote down all the instructions and temporary password for me. (He did it on his phone to be sure it worked.) I was out of town at that time (a part was missing, that the retailer had to ship, so he had to make 2 trips) but I trusted him completely after the first appointment, and Egger’s is the preferred vendor in my condo…”

Exterior lighting questions

Questions? Call 970-669-1883 or email info@eggerselectric.com.

Should outdoor lights be on a motion sensor or dusk-to-dawn?
Motion sensors save energy and draw attention to movement; dusk-to-dawn photocells keep entries lit all night. Many homes use both: dusk-to-dawn at the door and motion at the driveway or side yard.
What fixtures can be used outdoors?
Choose fixtures rated for wet locations where they’re exposed to rain or snow (damp-rated is fine under a covered porch), and LED fixtures or bulbs rated for cold weather.
Will outdoor lights hold up to Colorado weather?
Choose fixtures rated for wet locations and made for outdoor use, with sealed LED fixtures or bulbs rated for cold weather. We seal boxes and mounting plates so snow and wind-driven rain stay out.
Why does my outdoor outlet keep tripping?
Moisture in the outlet or a plugged-in device is the usual cause, especially after storms or snowmelt. A worn GFCI can also trip. If it trips again right after you reset it, unplug everything and call us.
Can you add an outdoor outlet?
Yes. Outdoor outlets need GFCI protection and a weather-resistant, in-use cover so they stay protected while something is plugged in.
Do I need a permit for exterior lighting?
New exterior lighting circuits, wiring and outlets need a permit and inspection. Simple fixture swaps on an existing circuit often don’t, but we’ll tell you before we start.
How much does exterior lighting cost?
On every visit, a licensed Eggers electrician handles the job you called about and runs our full Safety Inspection. There's a $89 service charge — and it is credited toward your job if you move forward. You also get a written price before work starts.
