Transfer switches for home generators

A transfer switch is what makes a generator safe to connect to your home. We size it to your panel and your generator.

Automatic transfer switches

Used with standby generators. They switch your home to generator power when utility power fails, and back when it returns.

Manual transfer switches

Used with portable generators. You start the generator and switch the circuits you choose.

Sized to your home

The switch has to be rated for your electrical service, your panel and your generator’s output. We’ll confirm the right size for your home.

Prevents backfeed

A transfer switch keeps generator power from flowing back onto utility lines, which protects line workers.

Permit and inspection

Transfer switch installation needs an electrical permit. We pull it and schedule the inspection.

Planning what to power

We help you pick the circuits that matter most, like the furnace, fridge, sump pump and lights.

Transfer switch questions

Questions? Call 970-669-1883 or email info@eggerselectric.com.

What does a generator transfer switch do?
A transfer switch disconnects your home from the utility before generator power is connected. That stops generator power from flowing back onto utility lines, which can injure line workers, and it keeps utility power and generator power from meeting when the power comes back.
What is the difference between an automatic and a manual transfer switch?
An automatic transfer switch works with a standby generator. When it senses an outage, the generator starts and the switch moves your home over on its own, then switches back when utility power returns. A manual transfer switch is usually paired with a portable generator. You set up the generator outdoors, plug it into an outdoor power inlet and move the switch yourself.
Do I need a permit for a transfer switch?
Yes. Installing a transfer switch is electrical work that needs a permit and inspection. We pull the permit and schedule the inspection for you.
Can I use a transfer switch with a portable generator?
Yes. A manual transfer switch with a properly rated outdoor power inlet is a safe way to connect a portable generator. Always run the generator outdoors, well away from doors, windows and vents, and follow the distance in your generator’s manual. Never run it in a garage.
Is an interlock kit the same as a transfer switch?
Both keep your home from backfeeding the utility. An interlock is a mechanical device that keeps the main breaker and the generator breaker from being on at the same time. It must be listed for your specific panel and needs a permit. We’ll recommend the right option for your panel.
How much does a transfer switch cost?
Every home is different, so we start with the $89 Eggers Safety Check & Estimate Visit. A licensed electrician runs an 8-point safety check and gives you an upfront price before any work starts. The $89 is credited toward the job if you move forward. All work is backed by our workmanship warranty.
