Do I Need a Panel Upgrade for an EV Charger?

car-chargers-fort-collins,

Not always. Many homes can add a Level 2 EV charger on a new dedicated circuit without replacing the panel. You may need a panel upgrade if your panel has no open breaker spaces, if a load calculation shows your service does not have enough spare capacity, or if the panel is old or damaged. A licensed electrician can tell you which applies after looking at your panel and doing a load calculation. A load-management device is sometimes an alternative to an upgrade.

What decides whether you need an upgrade

Capacity

Your service size (often 100, 150 or 200 amps) sets how much power the house can draw at once. A load calculation adds up what the home actually uses, including heating, cooling, cooking, the water heater and dryer, and checks whether a charger circuit fits within the service. Homes with a heat pump, electric range, hot tub or second EV use more of that capacity.

Space

A Level 2 charger needs a 240-volt breaker, which takes two spaces in the panel. A full panel can sometimes be reorganized; otherwise a subpanel or a new panel is needed.

Condition

Panels that are damaged, overheating, or older brands with known concerns, such as some Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels, are usually replaced before adding a big new load.

Options besides a full panel upgrade

  • A smaller charger circuit. Many chargers can be set to a lower current. Charging is slower but often still enough overnight.
  • Load management. Some chargers and add-on devices reduce or pause charging when the house is using a lot of power, so the total stays within your service.
  • A subpanel. Adds space when the panel is full but the service has capacity.

Which one fits depends on your panel, your driving and your plans, such as a second EV or a heat pump later.

How the install works

  1. Estimate visit. A licensed electrician checks the panel, runs the load calculation and looks at the route to your parking spot.
  2. Written price. You get a price for the charger circuit and any panel work, and approve it before work starts.
  3. Permit. A new 240-volt circuit needs an electrical permit and inspection. In Fort Collins, for example, the City’s electric permit covers residential EV chargers.
  4. Install and inspection. We run the dedicated circuit, connect your charger, test it with you and schedule the inspection.

Questions to ask before you buy a charger

  • Where will you park, and how far is that from the panel? Longer runs mean larger wire and more cost.
  • Is a second EV likely in the next few years? Planning for it now can avoid a second project.
  • Do you want a hardwired charger or a plug-in model? Both work; the installation differs.
  • Will you add a heat pump, induction range or hot tub soon? Those change the load calculation.
  • Do you want whole-home surge protection for the charger and the rest of your electronics?

Rebates

Utilities in our area, including Fort Collins Utilities, Loveland Water and Power and Xcel Energy, have offered EV charger rebates at times. Programs change, so check your utility’s current offers before you buy.

Frequently asked questions

Can a 100-amp panel handle an EV charger?

Sometimes. It depends on what else the home uses. A load calculation shows whether a charger circuit fits, possibly at a lower charging current or with load management.

How many breaker spaces does an EV charger need?

A 240-volt charger circuit uses a two-pole breaker, which takes two spaces in most panels.

Is load management safe?

Yes, when it uses a listed device or a charger feature designed for it and is installed to the manufacturer’s instructions and the adopted code.

Do I need a permit for an EV charger?

Yes. A new 240-volt circuit needs an electrical permit and inspection. We pull it.
