Adding an outlet usually means extending an existing circuit or running a new one from the panel. The price depends on how far the outlet is from a usable circuit or the panel, how the wire can be routed through walls, floors and the attic, and whether the circuit has capacity left. Kitchens, bathrooms, garages, outdoors and appliance outlets have extra rules, such as GFCI protection and dedicated circuits.
Adding new outlets usually requires an electrical permit from your city or county, or the state electrical board in some areas. Simply replacing an existing outlet often doesn’t. We pull the permit when one is needed and schedule the inspection.
Extend a circuit or run a new one?
An outlet for lamps or phone chargers can often be added to a nearby circuit if it isn’t already heavily loaded. Anything with a large, steady load, such as a space heater, microwave, freezer, window AC, workshop tool or hot tub, usually needs its own dedicated circuit. See appliance circuits.
Rooms with special rules
- Kitchens and bathrooms: GFCI protection and specific circuits for countertop outlets.
- Garages, basements and outdoors: GFCI protection; outdoor outlets need weather-resistant devices and in-use covers.
- Bedrooms and living areas: AFCI protection, as described below.
New or extended outlet circuits in most living areas, like bedrooms, living rooms, kitchens and hallways, typically need AFCI protection, which helps reduce the risk of fires from damaged or arcing wiring. Kitchens, baths, garages, outdoors and other locations near water also need GFCI protection. We’ll tell you what your project needs.
What affects the price
- Distance to a usable circuit or the panel.
- Finished walls and ceilings, which take more work to route through.
- Whether a new breaker space is available in the panel.
- The permit and inspection.
Tell us what you’ll plug in and where. We’ll recommend the right circuit and give you a written price. If your home has many extension cords and power strips, that is a good sign it needs more outlets.
