What we check before installing your charger

A good EV charger install starts with your panel and your garage. Here is what a licensed electrician looks at during the estimate visit.

Panel capacity

A load calculation shows whether your panel can carry a dedicated charger circuit, or whether you need a load-management device or a panel upgrade.

Charger location

Where you park, where the cord reaches, and the distance from the panel all affect wire size and price.

Charger choice

Tesla Wall Connector or a universal (J1772) charger, hardwired or plug-in. We help you match it to your car and circuit.

Permit and inspection

A new 240-volt circuit needs a permit and inspection. We pull the permit and meet the inspector.

Utility rebates

Fort Collins Utilities, Loveland Water and Power and Xcel Energy have offered charger rebates at times. Check your utility for current programs.

Room for a second EV

If a second EV is likely, we plan the circuit and panel space now so you are not paying twice.

An 8-point electrical safety check plus your detailed estimate. The $89 is credited toward your job if you move forward. It’s only due if you decide not to go ahead.

The 8 points: electrical panel, main grounding & bonding, GFCI protection, smoke & CO detectors, outlets & switches, visible wiring, exterior electrical, and whole-home surge protection. Each one is marked Pass or Needs Attention.

Home EV charger guide

What decides the cost, the circuit and the timeline for a Level 2 charger at home.

Before the install

What do you check before installing a charger?

We look at your panel, your service size, the distance from the panel to where you park, and the charger you want. A load calculation shows whether your panel can take the new circuit as is, with a load-management device, with a charger set to a lower current, or only after an upgrade.

Plug-in or hardwired?

Some chargers plug into a 240-volt outlet and some are hardwired. Tesla Wall Connectors are hardwired only; they never plug into an outlet. We set the charging current during setup to match your circuit, and since the charger has built-in ground-fault protection, no extra GFCI breaker is needed.

Can I buy my own charger?

Yes, tell us the model when you book so we can plan the circuit and the route. Customer-supplied chargers must be UL-listed (or listed by another recognized lab), sized for your circuit, and installed per the manufacturer's instructions.

Permits and the install day

What does the permit cover?

Adding a charger circuit needs a permit and inspection. In Northern Colorado, your city or county building department issues it, and we pull it for you.

What happens after the install?

We test the charger with your car if it’s there, show you how the circuit is labeled in your panel, and schedule the inspection. The work is backed by our 2-year workmanship warranty. See panel upgrades if your panel is full.

Do I need a panel upgrade to install a Level 2 charger?
Not always. Many homes have enough capacity for a dedicated charger circuit. We do a load calculation on your panel first; if it is short on room or capacity, we explain options such as a panel upgrade or a load-management device. See panel upgrades.
How much does a home EV charger installation cost?
It depends mainly on the distance from your panel to the parking spot, your panel capacity and the charger you choose. We give you a written price before every job. Every visit includes the repair, installation or service you called us for, plus the $89 Eggers Safety Inspection, and the $89 is credited toward the job. Schedule Service to get started.
How fast does a Level 2 charger charge?
A Level 2 charger is much faster than a standard 120-volt outlet. Actual speed depends on your vehicle and the size of the circuit, and most drivers can fully recharge overnight.
Can you install a Tesla Wall Connector?
Yes. We install Tesla Wall Connectors and universal chargers for other makes, hardwired or plug-in. A plug-in charger on a 14-50 outlet is flexible, but the outlet needs GFCI protection, which can nuisance-trip with some chargers. A hardwired charger has built-in protection, often allows higher charging speeds, and is usually our recommendation.
Do I need a permit for an EV charger?
Yes. A new 240-volt circuit for an EV charger needs an electrical permit and inspection from your local building department. We pull the permit and schedule the inspection.
Do you install EV chargers in Fort Collins and Windsor?
Yes. In Fort Collins, the City’s electric permit covers residential EV chargers, and we pull it for you. See EV chargers in Fort Collins. We also install in Windsor, Berthoud, Johnstown and the rest of our service area.
Are there rebates for home EV chargers?
Utilities in our area, including Fort Collins Utilities, Loveland Water and Power and Xcel Energy, have offered EV charger rebates at times. Programs change, so check your utility for current offers; we can provide the paperwork details they ask for.
Do you install chargers for businesses?
Yes. We install chargers for light commercial properties. See our commercial electrical services.
Do Tesla Wall Connectors need a GFCI breaker?
No. Wall Connectors are hardwired and have built-in ground-fault protection, so no extra GFCI breaker is needed. We set the charging current during setup to match your circuit.
Can I add a charger without upgrading my panel?
Often. A load calculation may show you can add a charger as is, with a load-management device, or with a charger set to a lower current.
