GFCIs are required in more places than older homes have, and they wear out over time.
Kitchens, baths, garages, outdoors, laundry areas and unfinished basements.
GFCIs that won’t reset or won’t trip when tested.
Find the moisture, appliance or wiring problem behind repeat trips.
Weather-resistant GFCI outlets with in-use covers.
GFCI protection on ungrounded circuits, labeled “No equipment ground.”
GFCI protection at the panel for a whole circuit.
Where GFCI protection matters, what causes nuisance tripping, and how we approach upgrades in older homes.
If your kitchen counters, bathrooms, garage, laundry area or outdoor outlets have no GFCI outlet or GFCI breaker protecting them, that’s worth a look. Many Loveland homes built before the 1990s have far fewer protected locations than today’s homes.
A GFCI that trips with nothing plugged in, trips every time it rains, or won’t reset is telling you something. The cause can be moisture in an outdoor box, a damaged cord, a failing appliance or a worn-out device. We test to find which one it is before replacing anything.
One GFCI can protect several outlets downstream, sometimes in another room or the garage. When a group of outlets goes dead, a tripped GFCI is often the reason. We find and label which outlets each GFCI protects so you know where to look next time.
Pressing TEST should cut power. If it doesn’t, or the device is old and discolored, it should be replaced. We recommend pressing TEST once a month.
Sometimes a GFCI outlet at the first location on a circuit is the cleanest fix. Other times a GFCI breaker in the panel makes more sense, for example when the first outlet is hard to reach or a circuit feeds several wet locations. We explain the options and the tradeoffs.
In homes without a ground wire, a GFCI can add shock protection to two-prong locations. It doesn’t add a ground, so those outlets are labeled ‘No Equipment Ground’ (and ‘GFCI Protected’), and some electronics and surge strips still won’t be properly grounded. We talk through when rewiring or adding a ground is the better long-term answer.
The number of locations, whether we use outlets or breakers, how easy the boxes are to reach, and whether we find damaged wiring along the way. You get a written price before any work starts.
When the work needs a permit, we pull it and schedule the inspection. Before we leave, we test every protected outlet with you. The work is backed by our 2-year workmanship warranty.
An 8-point electrical safety check plus your detailed estimate. The $89 is credited toward your job if you move forward. It’s only due if you decide not to go ahead.
The 8 points: electrical panel, main grounding & bonding, GFCI protection, smoke & CO detectors, outlets & switches, visible wiring, exterior electrical, and whole-home surge protection. Each one is marked Pass or Needs Attention.
