Lighting guide for Loveland and Northern Colorado homes

How to plan lighting that works for each room, what changes when you add fixtures, and what to ask before you buy.

Planning the right light

How do I plan lighting for a room?

Think in layers. Ambient light lights the whole room, task light covers where you work, like counters, desks and vanities, and accent light shows off art, shelves or a fireplace. Most rooms that feel dark have one ceiling fixture doing all three jobs. We walk the room with you and suggest where each layer goes before anything is cut or wired.

What color temperature should I choose?

Color temperature is measured in kelvin. Warmer light (about 2700K–3000K) feels cozy in living rooms and bedrooms. Neutral to cooler light (3500K–4000K) is crisp in kitchens, garages and work areas. Keep one color temperature per room so fixtures match. If you’re unsure, we can bring samples so you can see the difference in your space.

Do LED fixtures need special dimmers?

Often, yes. Older dimmers were built for incandescent bulbs and can make LEDs flicker, buzz or not dim all the way down. We match each dimmer to the fixtures it controls. Use an LED-compatible dimmer from the fixture maker’s list.

Adding and upgrading fixtures

Can you add recessed lights to an existing ceiling?

Usually, yes. Remodel (wafer) recessed lights fit into finished ceilings. Where they touch insulation, they must be IC-rated, and airtight models help keep heated air out of the attic. We check framing, insulation and what’s above the ceiling first, and most jobs don’t need major drywall work.

Do I need a new circuit for more lights?

Not always. Because LEDs use much less power, you can often add lights to an existing circuit. We'll confirm the circuit can handle it. If a new circuit is needed, we tell you up front.

What about high ceilings and outdoor lights?

We handle vaulted ceilings, stairwells, chandeliers, fans and outdoor fixtures, including motion lights and dusk-to-dawn controls. Outdoor fixtures need to be rated for wet or damp locations, and we seal and protect connections so they hold up to Colorado weather.

“I had a ceiling fan installed by “Sterling”, who also took the time to set up the Bond Home app and wrote down all the instructions and temporary password for me. (He did it on his phone to be sure it worked.) I was out of town at that time (a part was missing, that the retailer had to ship, so he had to make 2 trips) but I trusted him completely after the first appointment, and Egger’s is the preferred vendor in my condo…”

Serving Loveland, Fort Collins and Northern Colorado · 970-669-1883

What lighting services do you offer in Loveland?
Eggers Electric installs indoor lighting, recessed lights, LED upgrades, exterior and landscape lighting, and switches and dimmers for homes in Loveland, Fort Collins and Northern Colorado.
Can you upgrade my home to LED lighting?
Yes. We can replace existing fixtures with LED fixtures and make sure your dimmers are compatible to help prevent flicker and buzz.
What color temperature should I choose for LED lights?
Warm white (about 2700K to 3000K) is the usual choice for living rooms and bedrooms. Cooler white (about 3500K to 4000K) suits kitchens, garages and work areas. Keep one color temperature within a room so the light looks even.
Do you install recessed (can) lights?
Yes, we install recessed lighting in new and existing ceilings and help you plan placement for the room. In insulated ceilings, recessed lights must be IC-rated (rated for contact with insulation) and airtight-rated and sealed.
Can you add a light where there is no switch or wiring now?
Yes. We can run a new circuit or extend an existing one to add a fixture and switch. How easy it is depends on attic, crawlspace and wall access, which we check at the estimate visit.
Do you install outdoor and landscape lighting?
Yes. We install exterior security lights, porch and garage lights, and landscape lighting for Northern Colorado homes.
Can you install a ceiling fan where a light fixture is now?
Yes. A ceiling fan needs an electrical box listed for fan support, or a listed fan brace; a standard light box isn’t strong enough. We check the box and the framing and replace or brace it if needed. See ceiling fan installation.
Why do my lights flicker?
Flickering can come from a loose bulb, an incompatible dimmer, or a loose connection in the wiring. If it's more than a bulb, have an electrician check it, since loose connections can be a safety concern.
Why do my LED lights buzz or flicker on a dimmer?
Many older dimmers were made for incandescent bulbs. Using an LED-compatible dimmer and dimmable LED bulbs usually solves it. See switches and dimmers.
What does a lighting project cost?
Every visit includes the repair, installation or service you called us for, plus the $89 Eggers Safety Inspection: an 8-point electrical safety check plus an estimate or troubleshooting. If you move forward with the work, the $89 is credited toward the job. Every job is backed by our 2-year workmanship warranty.
How do I schedule lighting service?
Call 970-669-1883 or click Schedule Service. Call us 7 days a week, 7am–8pm.
How many recessed lights do I need in a room?
It depends on the room size, ceiling height and how you use the space. A common rule of thumb is to space recessed lights about half the ceiling height apart, then adjust for counters and seating. We lay out the spacing with you before we cut any holes.
Do outdoor light fixtures need a special rating?
Yes. Fixtures in covered areas like porches need a damp-location rating, and fixtures exposed to rain or snow need a wet-location rating. We check the rating and seal connections so they hold up to Colorado weather.
