Hot tub wiring questions

Questions? Call 970-669-1883 or email info@eggerselectric.com.

What kind of circuit does a hot tub need?
Most hot tubs need a dedicated 240-volt GFCI-protected circuit sized to the manufacturer’s specifications, plus a disconnect within sight of the tub, kept a safe distance from the water as code requires. It needs a permit and inspection. Only small plug-and-play tubs made for a 120-volt GFCI outlet can plug in, and never through an extension cord.
Do I need a permit to wire a hot tub?
Yes. Hot tub hookups need an electrical permit and inspection; for example, the Town of Berthoud lists hot tub electrical hook-ups among projects that require a permit, and Fort Collins includes hot tub circuits in its electric permit.
Can my panel handle a hot tub?
Many can, but older or full panels may not have the capacity. We check with a load calculation. See panel upgrades.
Can I plug a hot tub into an outdoor outlet?
Only small plug-and-play tubs made for a 120-volt GFCI outlet. Never use an extension cord. Most full-size tubs need a hardwired 240-volt circuit.
What is bonding for a pool or hot tub?
Bonding ties the metal parts around a pool or spa together so there’s no shock voltage between them. It is inspected as part of the permit.
How much does hot tub wiring cost?
It depends mostly on the distance from the panel and your panel capacity. On every visit, a licensed Eggers electrician handles the job you called about and runs our full Safety Inspection. There's a $89 service charge — and it is credited toward your job if you move forward. You also get a written price before work starts.
