Generator guide for Northern Colorado homes

The safe ways to connect backup power, and what goes into choosing between a portable and a standby generator.

Connecting backup power safely

What is the safe way to connect a portable generator?

The safe way to connect it is a power inlet and a transfer switch or a listed interlock made for your panel, never a cord into a wall outlet. Backfeeding through an outlet can put power on the utility lines and endanger line workers. See portable generator connection.

Where should a generator run?

Outdoors, well away from the house, so exhaust can’t drift inside through a door, window or the garage. Keep working CO alarms in the home.

Choosing and keeping a generator

How do I choose between portable and standby?

A portable generator with an inlet and interlock runs the circuits you pick and costs less. A standby generator starts on its own and can run more of the house. We help you list the loads that matter most, such as the furnace, refrigerator, well pump or medical equipment, and size from there. Well and sump pumps need extra starting power, so we size the generator for them. If someone depends on medical equipment, have a backup plan too, and ask your utility about its medical-priority list.

Do generators need a permit?

Yes. Connecting a generator to your home’s wiring needs an electrical permit and inspection from your city or county. We pull it.

How do I keep a generator ready?

Follow the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule and let a standby unit run its automatic exercise. See generator maintenance.

“Eggers Electricians Brandon and Andy were professional, efficient, kind, polite and job knowledgeable. They were very aware of my home's furniture surroundings, as not to damage anything, as well as their primary objective is to be safe, as they had a cathedral ceiling fan to replace, 2 stories up. They worked as a cohesive team, and not only respected the customer, but eachother as well.…”

Serving Loveland, Fort Collins and Northern Colorado · 970-669-1883

Do you install home standby generators in Loveland?
Yes. Eggers Electric installs and services home backup generators in Loveland, Fort Collins, Windsor, Greeley and throughout Northern Colorado, including mountain areas like Estes Park.
Should I get a portable or standby generator?
A portable generator powers a few essentials through heavy-duty cords or a transfer switch or interlock kit; a standby generator starts automatically and can run much more of your home. We'll walk you through both options based on what you want to keep running during an outage. Never plug a generator into a wall outlet (it backfeeds the utility lines and can kill line workers). Never run it indoors, in a garage, or near open windows or doors.
What size standby generator do I need?
It depends on whether you want to back up the whole house or only essentials such as the furnace, fridge, well or sump pump, and lights. We size the generator from a load calculation of the circuits you choose.
Can a standby generator run on natural gas or propane?
Yes. Most home standby generators can run on natural gas or propane. With natural gas, we check that your gas meter and line can supply the generator along with your other gas appliances.
Do I need a transfer switch for my generator?
A properly installed transfer switch, or a listed interlock kit made for your panel, is the safe way to connect a generator. Both need a permit. We install and connect it so the generator powers your home without sending power back onto utility lines.
Can I plug a portable generator into a wall outlet?
No. Backfeeding through an outlet can energize the utility lines and endanger line workers and your home. Connect a portable generator through a transfer switch or an approved interlock. See portable generator connection.
Do standby generators need a permit?
Yes. Standby generators need an electrical permit, and often building or gas permits and setback checks too. We size your generator using the manufacturer's altitude derating, since Northern Colorado sits at about 5,000 feet.
How much does a generator installation cost?
Every visit includes the repair, installation or service you called us for, plus the $89 Eggers Safety Inspection: an 8-point electrical safety check plus an estimate or troubleshooting. If you move forward with the work, the $89 is credited toward the job. We'll give you a quote for your specific generator and installation before work starts.
Do you service and repair existing generators?
Yes, we work on existing home generator connections and electrical issues. Call us to describe the problem and we'll get you scheduled.
How often does a standby generator need maintenance?
We recommend maintenance at least once a year, or as your generator’s manufacturer specifies, plus regular self-test runs. See generator maintenance.
Is generator installation covered by a warranty?
Our workmanship is warranted for 1 year from the date of service. Parts carry the manufacturer's warranty. If something we installed fails under normal use, call us at 970-669-1883 and we'll come back and make it right. Full terms are on your invoice.
